James Snobl Jr., 79

Mahnomen - James Snobl Jr., 79, died Saturday, August 8, 1998 near Bagley.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 12) at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Naytahwaush with Father Ron Meyer O.M.I. officiating. Fran Dunn will be the organist, and special music will be provided by Edie and John Mattson. Andrea Snobl will present a special reading. Casketbearers will be James' grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Honorary casketbearers will be Stanley Burdick, Delbert Ditch, Stanley Ditch, John Frank, Gerry Gast, James Kraisa, Steve Snobl, Ed Trautner, Ernest "Pitchy" Lafriniere, Jim Lafriniere, Dick LaVoy, Wally Redland, Phillip Small and Duane Snobl. Military rites will be accorded by the Bejou VFW Wild Rice Post 1226. Burial will be in Arkansas. The Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen is in charge of the arrangements.

James Snobl Jr. was born on January 19, 1919 in Cedar Rapids, IA, the son of James and Anna (Strasil) Snobl. At the age of one, he moved with this parents to Roy Lake and remained a life-long resident there.

He served in World War II from December 30, 1941 to October 4, 1945, achieving the rank of Army Sergeant E5 Expert Rifle.

On February 18, 1945 James was united in marriage to Nellie Owens in Hot Springs National Park, Arkansas. In the fall of that year the couple moved to Roy Lake and purchased his parents' farm. James farmed until he retired in 1988. He also owned and operated the Woodpecker Saw Mill for 25 years.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion and White Earth Equal Rights Committee. He served on the Clover Township Board for 25 years.

James is survived by his wife, Nellie, of rural Mahnomen; five sons, James (Sharon) Sims of Thief River Falls, Daniel (Mary) Snobl of Amiret, John (Wanda) Snobl of Bagley, Jerry (Linda) Snobl of Dixon, MO and Douglas (Marlee) Snobl of Grand Forks, ND; two daughters, Carol Griffith of Hattiesburg, MS and Dixie (Bill) Snobl Johnson of Anaconda, MT; 20 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; one brother, Frank (Vivian) Snobl of Roy Lake; and two sisters, Mary Ditch of Cedar Rapids, IA and Bessie (Stanley) Krajsa of Mahnomen.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joseph; and two grandsons, Owen and Benjamin Johnson.
