
Thief River Falls - Edith Sloman, 95, died Monday, February 17, 1997 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls. Arrangements were with Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held Saturday, February 22 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church with Rev. Bob LaPlante officiating. Burial was in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Casketbearers were Mark Pagnac, Chris Pagnac, Howard Bjorgaard, Todd Bjorgaard, Jeremy Bjorgaard, Jon McGlynn, Josh Myhrer, and Justin Rhodes. Honorary casketbearers were all of Edith's grandchildren.
Edith Bail was born on March 2, 1901 in rural Penn, ND, the daughter of George and Emma (Demars) Bail. She was baptized and confirmed and attended rural school in the Penn, ND area. She loved to cook even as a young girl and she cooked and baked for the family and even on a cook car for a threshing crew for 44 days. She was very musical and she played piano for the silent movies and also in three orchestras. She was united in marriage to Bill Lannoye on July 15, 1919. After their marriage they lived in Penn, ND and farmed for a few years. In 1937 they moved to Newfolden where they bought a cafe and named it "Bills Cafe". In 1947 they sold the cafe and moved to Big Lake where they bought a grocery store. They called it "Lannoye's Market". While living in Big Lake they enjoyed hunting and fishing. On October 16, 1961 Bill died. She later moved to Devils Lake, ND in 1962 and was united in marriage to George Sloman. During this time Edith began bowling in a coffee league. She continued bowling until she was 75 years old. George died on July 13, 1976 and Edith moved to Thief River Falls where she resided until moving to Newfolden to live with her daughter Avis.
She enjoyed music, traveling, bowling, hunting ducks, grouse and prairie chickens. She was a fan of baseball, football and hockey games her entire life.
She is survived by daughter Avis (Hilton) Hjelle of Newfolden; sister Dolores Johnson of Thief River Falls; 16 grandchildren; 31 Great-grandchildren and 17 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; parents; sons Gordon, Robert, James and Ronald Lannoye; sisters Alma Bail, Beatrice Nelson, Josephine Gessner, Evelyn Tinklenberg; and brothers Leo and Edward Bail.
