Donald Shand, 75

Goodridge - Donald Shand, 75, died Friday, March 6, 1999 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 10) at Faith Lutheran Church in Goodridge with Reverend Robert Dahlen officiating. Margie Iverson will be the organist, and casketbearers will be Ron Shand, David Shand, Alvin Asp, Larry Myhrer, Randy Downs, Jared Asp and Ken Asp. Burial will be in Highlanding Cemetery in Highlanding township of Pennington county.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls is in charge of the arrangements.

Donald Shand was born on November 18, 1923 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, the son of Alexander and Beryl (Horton) Shand. He attended school in Vancouver and graduated from high school there.

In 1942 he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served as a navigator on a Royal Air Force Lancaster bomber. Donald flew a full tour of 30 missions and was discharge in 1945 after achieving the rank of First Lieutenant.

After returning from the war he attended the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, graduating with honors in physics and math. Donald then worked on a seismograph crew with Imperial Oil Co. in Edmonton, Alberta.

On February 2, 1951 he was united in marriage to Inga Stokke in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1953 Donald left his job with Imperial Oil Co. and began selling DuMont televisions. He then worked for Alberta Government Telephone before moving to Fort Wayne, IN where he worked for the General Telephone Company. During that time, Donald returned to school at Purdue University where he received professional engineering certification.

In 1971 Donald and his family moved to Plummer, and he purchased a farm in Emardville township of Red Lake county and began farming. In 1974 Donald began employment in Alaska cutting roads through the Brooks Range for the Alaskan Pipeline. He also worked as an engineer in Tennessee and Puerto Rico. Don's love for farming brought him back to the land, and the family moved to New York Mills where they farmed for five years. After living in Seattle for a year, the Shands returned to Minnesota in 1986 and purchased a farm in Kratka township of Pennington county where they have since resided.

Donald is survived by his wife, Inga of rural Goodridge; one daughter, Dawn (Allen) Bailey of Sumner, WA; two sons, Rod (Virginia) of Fargo, ND and David, at home in Goodridge; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, Mark in 1986; one daughter, Grace in 1980; and his parents. A00003B1999MR10
