
Thief River Falls - Madeleine Scramstad, 77, died Wednesday, December 10, 1997 at her home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held Saturday, December 13 at 2 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend John Wollenzein officiating. Dee Wollen-zein was the organist. LeRoy Aasland was the soloist. Casketbearers were Dr. Charles Samuelson, Roy Jorgenson, Vernon Sorenson, Jay Gjernes, Tom Radniecki and Greg Radniecki. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls handled the arrangements.
Madeleine Louise Gjernes was born on June 19, 1920 in Oklee, the daughter of Carl and Sadie (Vattendahl) Gjernes. She was baptized on August 15, 1920 at Zion Lutheran Church in Oklee by Reverend J.K. Lerohl and later confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. She attended elementary schools in Oklee and Thief River Falls and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1939.
Madeleine worked as a dental assistant for some time before her marriage to Owen Scramstad on November 1, 1941. The couple lived in Thief River Falls before moving to Ogden, Utah where her husband was a civilian instructor for the Air Force. The couple returned to Thief River Falls in 1943 and in 1952 moved to Manhattan Beach, California. In 1969 they returned to Thief River Falls where they have since resided.
Madeleine was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, a long-time circle member and member of the Decor Club.
She is survived by her husband, Owen; two sons, Richard (Denise) Scramstad of Ypsilanti, MI and David (Patricia) Scramstad of Thief River Falls; four grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
Madeleine was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Earl and Orlin Gjernes; and one sister, Ardelle Tierney.
