
Red Lake Falls - Donald E. Schmidt, 71, died Wednesday, January 5, 2000 at Riverview Hospital in Crookston.
A memorial mass was held on Tuesday, January 11 at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Special music was provided by St. Joseph's Church Choir. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Church Cemetery in the spring. The Petterson Funeral Home of Red Lake Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
Donald Edward Schmidt was born on July 4, 1928 at Red Lake Falls, the son of Joseph and Frances (Hirsch) Schmidt. He was baptized, made his first communion and was confirmed at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. He attended school in Red Lake Falls, graduating from Lafayette High School in 1947.
After graduation he worked for the Northern Pacific Railroad and American Crystal Sugar Co. in East Grand Forks. Don was inducted into the U.S. Marine Corps at Camp Pendleton, CA in 1952 and spent his enlistment in Hawaii. Following his honorable discharge in 1954 he was employed by Northern States Power in Red Lake Falls and later transferred to Grand Forks where he worked until his retirement in 1986. Since retiring he has resided in Red Lake Falls.
Donald is survived by one sister, Bernardine Schmidt of Red Lake Falls, and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Teresa Hanson and Marcella Helland; and one brother, Bernard Schmidt.
