
Goodridge - Jack Scheef, 62, died Sunday, May 30, 1999 at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, NE following a short battle with cancer.
Mass of Christian burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, June 4 at St. Anne's Catholic Church in Goodridge with Father Dennis Wieland officiating. Audrey Rogalla was the organist, and special music was provided by soloists, Kent Hudson and Loris Hebel, St. Anne's Church Choir and Pastor Robert Dahlen on the trumpet.
Annie Kosmatka and Shari Nunn were the giftbearers, and the readers were Mark Ellinger and Betty Troska. Casketbearers were Rodney Wayne, Jack Hebel, Jim Johnson, Dale Anderson, Bill Kennel, Johnnie Ellinger and Carroll Bishop. Honorary casketbearers were all of Jack's grandchildren. Burial was in St. Bernard's Catholic Cemetery in Thief River Falls. The Green Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Jack Henry Scheef was born on November 19,1936 in Omaha, Nebraska, the son of Harry and Erna (Hennig) Scheef. He was baptized and confirmed at Resurrection Evangelical Lutheran Church in Gretna, NE and attended Gretna Public Schools. Following school, he worked as a drywaller for Grothe Construction. He was employed as a mason for Gary Chapman and also worked for the Chapmans in their hardware store.
Jack became a member of the Catholic church in 1956 and was united in marriage to Marjorie Ann Ellinger on June 1, 1957 at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Papillion, NE.
After his marriage, he worked for his brother-in-law at Shorty's Standard Station in Gretna, NE. It was there that he was trained in mechanical skills. Jack and his brother-in-law, LeRoy Grell, owned and operated an excavating business. He also operated a road grader for the Nebraska Road Department for several years and worked for Union Meat Packing plant in Omaha.
In 1968, Jack moved with his family to Grand Plain township in Marshall county where he worked managing a farm. After he and Marge purchased their own farm in Moylan township of Marshall township, he also worked at Farmer's Co-op Grain & Seed in Thief River Falls.
While living in Goodridge, Jack attended St. Anne's Catholic Church where he served on the parish council and its building committee, taking pride in the church's upkeep. He was also a member of the Goodridge Lions Club and Goodridge Volunteer Fire Department.
Jack enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, attending his grandchildren's football and basketball games, traveling and going to flea markets.
After becoming disabled, he moved to Angle Inlet where he was the "Jack of all trades," helping his friends and neighbors fix anything that needed repairing. He and Marge spent the last four years wintering in San Juan, TX where he became ill in November of 1998.
Jack is survived by his wife Marge of Angle Inlet; two sons, Tom (Becky) Scheef of Goodridge and Mike (Tonie) Scheef of Warroad; one daughter, Julie (Don) Grabowska of Goodridge; nine grandchildren; one brother, Gene (Sandra) Scheef of Burr, NE; and four sisters, Joann Kennel of Gretna, NE, Pat Pike of Ashland, NE, Karen (LeRoy) Grell of Pender, NE and Marcella (Howard) Bishop of Roosevelt. He is also survived by two brothers-in-law, a sister-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Teresa; his parents; one sister, Geraldine Deloske; two infant brothers and a brother-in-law.
