Paul Saurdiff, 79

Grygla - Paul Saurdiff, 79, died Wednesday, September 23, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, September 26 at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with Reverend Roberta Johnson officiating. Joy Nordby was the organist. Soloists were Mandy Halvorson and Erica Halvorson. Bjorn Halvorson was the guitarist. Casketbearers were Thomas Kozojed, Anthony Kozojed Jr., Carl Sandahl, Michael Saurdiff, Benjerman Saurdiff and Carson Saurdiff. Honorary casketbearers were all of Paul's grandchildren. Burial was at St. Olaf Cemetery in Valley township of Marshall county. Military honors were provided by the Grygla VFW Post. The Green Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Paul Saurdiff was born on April 6, 1919 at Warroad, the son of Edmond and Licktil (Perrault) Saurdiff. He was baptized and confirmed at a Catholic church in Warroad and attended school in Warroad. Following his education he worked for sometime at the Civil Conservation Corporation in Washington and Idaho.

On September 21, 1940 Paul was united in marriage to Selma Dalos at Baudette. The couple made their home in Grygla before moving to Holt for a short time. They returned to Grygla where they have since made their home. Paul worked with his brother Albert on the Alaskan Highway before going into the service. He served in the United States Navy and was stationed in Okinawa during World War II. He entered into active service on January 3, 1945 and was honorably discharged on January 16, 1946.

Paul has owned and operated Saurdiff and Sons Trucking Company. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending time with his family.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the Grygla VFW Post.

Paul is survived by his wife, Selma "Sally" of Grygla; four daughters, Sharon (Anthony) Kozojed of Thief River Falls, Diane (Bruce) Sandahl of Lancaster, Susan (William) Hamiton of Skaneateles, NY and Jill (Lee) Olson of Warroad; five sons, Paul (Julie) Saurdiff Jr. of Grand Forks, ND, Richard (Diane) Saurdiff of Warroad, David (Gwen) Saurdiff of Grygla, Steven (Susan) Saurdiff of Grygla, Lee (Elizabeth "Betsy") Saurdiff of Grygla; 29 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alma Squire of Cosa Mesa, CA and Emma Parsons of Garden Grove, CA; one brother, Albert Saurdiff of Poulsbo, WA; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters, Mary Roseen, infant Marie Louise, Lillie Mae Knight and Alys Vicaryous; five brothers, Joseph, Wilfred, William "Bill", Lawrence, and Edmond "Ted"; and one nephew.
