Gladys Sather, 80

Red Lake Falls - Gladys Sather, 80, died Thursday, July 23, 1998 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, July 27 at 2 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden with Reverend Nancy Werner officiating. Sheila Nelson was the pianist and organist. Soloists were Eunice Waterworth and Cecil Malme. JoAnna Pearson played a violin solo. Casketbearers were Steven Alby, Christopher Ueland, Brian Bengtson, Judd Alby, Jared Alby and Matthew Carpenter. Burial was in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Gladys Evelyn Swanson was born on October 2, 1917 in Karlstad, the daughter of Alfred and Beda (Netterlund) Swanson. She attended school in Karlstad and graduated from Karlstad High School in 1935.

She worked as a domestic until her marriage to William "Bill" Sather on September 14, 1940 at Crookston. The couple made their home in several North Dakota communities, including Jamestown and Minot where Bill worked construction on the airforce bases.

In 1945 the couple moved to the Midde River community. They resided on the home farm in Como township for two years before moving to the present farm in New Maine township. William died on March 5, 1978. In 1987 Gladys moved to Thief River Falls. She spent some time at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center. For the past two years, she has been a resident of Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

She was an avid reader, gardener and artist. Her flowers brightened the homes of many relatives and friends. She was also interested in English, chemistry and physics.

Gladys is survived by two sons, William (Karen) Sather Jr. of Lakeville and Jon Sather of Apple Valley; five daughters, Mary Alby of Thief River Falls, Linda (David) Culp of Hinkley, Gail (Gary) Buttenhoff of St. Paul, Leanna (Lloyd) Bengtson of Newfolden and Kristi McMillan (husband David Anderson) of Dania, FL; one brother Stanley (Ruby) Swanson of Karlstad; three sisters, Loretta Prenevost and Martha LaPlante, both of Red Lake Falls and Pearl (Michael) Velasquez of California; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one son in infancy; one grandson, Shane Alby; three sisters, Lillian Ellis, Alma Sjodin and Myrtle Forsberg; and two nieces.
