Fosston - Dr. Norman Sather, 86, died Wednesday, January 26, 2000 at his home in Fosston.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m on Saturday, January 29 at Hope Lutheran Church in Fosston with Rev. Paul Magelssen officiating. Military rites were accorded by Tangen-Walstrom American Legion Post 114 of Fosston. Interment was in Hope Lutheran Cemetery with Carlin-Hoialmen Funeral Home of Fosston in charge of the arrangements.
Richard Norman Sather was born on April 27, 1912 in Fosston, the son of Allen G. and Clara (Ringoen) Sather. He attended school in Fosston and after graduating from Fosston High School in 1930 entered the University of North Dakota where he took pre-medical study and his first two years of medicine. After graduating from UND in 1934, he transferred to Rush Medical College, University of Chicago and then served an internship and medical residency in 1937 and 1938 at Ancker Hospital in St. Paul.
In August of 1939, Dr. Sather located in McIntosh where he practiced medicine prior to entering the United States Army Medical Corp in May of 1942. He was stationed at Fort Stevens, Oregon, McCloskey General Hospital and Regional Hospital at Camp Swift in Texas. After being honorably discharged as a Major in 1945, he joined Dr. P.C. Petersen in medical practice at Mora until 1949 when he joined his brothers, Dr. George Sather and Dr. Edgar "Bud" Sather at the Sather Clinic in Fosston.
On October 1, 1949, Norman married Martha L. Nordenstrom of Mora.
Dr. Sather was a lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church where he served on the board of trustees and as a Sunday school teacher. He was a charter member of Rotary, a member of the the American Legion and for many years served on the Fosston Board of Health. He also served for many years on the board of directors of Farmers State Bank in Fosston.
He was also a member of the Red River Valley Medical Society, the Academy of Family Practice, Minnesota Medical Society, American Geriatric Society and the Alpha Omega Alpha Society. Dr. Sather retired in 1981 after 32 years in the practice of medicine at the Sather Clinic in Fosston.
Survivors include his wife, Martha of Fosston; one son, Richard (Mei-Wen) of Thief River Falls; one grandson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Drs. George, Edgar "Bud" and Andrew Sather; and one sister, Marian Sather Moore. A00003B2000FB02
