Raymond Sagstuen, 76

Newfolden - Raymond Sagstuen, 76, died on Tuesday, January 12, 1999 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services were held at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 15 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt with Reverend Nancy Werner and Reverend Robert Dahlen officiating. Yvonne Larson was the organist, and the soloist was Don Lunke. Casketbearers were Morris Hansen, Dennis Hanson, Floyd Otto, David Myhrer, Jay Garthus and Larry Inman. Military honors were accorded by VFW Post 2793 of Thief River Falls and Otto Knutson American Legion Post of Newfolden. Burial was in Holt Cemetery in Holt. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Raymond Arnold Sagstuen was born on February 20, 1922 in Holt Village of Marshall county, the son of Ludvig and Ragna (Moberg) Sagstuen. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt. He attended school in Holt.

Ray entered the U.S. Army on August 4, 1943 at Fort Snelling. and served with the military police in San Francisco, CA. He was discharged on January 11, 1945, also at Fort Snelling.

On September 26, 1944 he was united in marriage to Marles Peterson at Thief River Falls. Raymond worked for Alton Carlson at the store in Holt. He later purchased the Holt Mercantile with this brother Louis, and they operated it until 1952. Raymond and Marles moved to Duluth where they lived until 1958 when they moved to Grand Forks, ND. Raymond worked for the Base Exchange at the Grand Forks Air Force Base. He also worked at Sears for six years. In 1974 the couple moved to their farm in New Folden township of Marshall county.

He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church where he served on several committees.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Marles; three daughters, Renae (David) Myers and Mardell (Jerry) Humble, both of Grand Forks, ND, and Julie (Lee) Norman of East Grand Forks; two sons, Gary (Lynette) of Grand Forks, ND and James of Newfolden; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Dorothy (special friend, Chuck Doppler) Morkrid of Baudette; one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Louis and Arnold; and one sister, Margaret Peterson.
