Clemence "Cobby" Saatzer, 84, died Thursday, January 18, 2001 at his
home in St. Cloud.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, January 23, at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with Rev. Robert Dahlen and Father Dennis Weiland officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist, and Don Wahlbeck was the soloist. Casketbearers were Greg Brekke, Bruce Halbasch, Wayne Halbasch, Dale Lappegaard, Paul Grovum and Gene Kirchner. Interment was in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Norden township of Pennington county.
Funeral services were also held on Sunday, January 21, at 7:30 p.m. at Daniel Funeral Home in St. Cloud.
Clemence Saatzer was born on April 1, 1916 at St. Cloud, the son of Frank and Catherine (Rennie) Saatzer. He served in the 90th Division under Gen. George Patton, 3rd Army European Theater, in Normandy, France and Germany. Cobby earned three Purple Hearts and the Bronze and Silver Star. He was recommended for the Medal of Honor during the Battle of the Bulge.
On July 3, 1954, he was united in marriage to Helen D. Olson at St. Paul's Catholic Church in St. Cloud. Cobby served as a professional firefighter with the St. Cloud Fire Department for 24 years.
He was a life member of the International Fire Fighters Association, Sun City American Legion Post 62, a life member of VFW Post 428 and the St. Cloud Disabled American Veterans.
Cobby is survived by his wife, Helen; a stepdaughter, Elaine Grovum of Coon Rapids; two step grandchildren; five step great-grandchildren; and four sisters, Lorraine (Peter) Bettendorf of St. Paul; Marjorie (Jack) Hill of Minden, Nev., Eleanor Ahearn of San Pueblo, Calif. and Bernice (Ralph) Krey of St. Cloud.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Yvonne Cordie and Veronica Kruger; and four brothers, Ray, Eugene, Lawrence and Roman. A00003B2000JA24
