Vernon Rystad, 76

Red Lake Falls - Vernon Rystad, 76, formerly of Oklee, died Thursday, December 9, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Monday, December 13 at Salem Lutheran Church, rural Oklee with Robert Paulson officiating. Marlan Marquis was the organist, and Donna Fossum was the organist. Casketbearers were Orlean Stoneouse, Donavon Stoneouse, Ronald Stoneouse, Roy Rystad, Ordean Rystad, Orlando Rystad and Jim Rystad. Military honors were accorded by the Plummer American Legion Post. Burial was in the Salem Lutheran Cemetery. The Petterson Funeral Home of Oklee was in charge of the arrangements.

Vernon Ellsworth Rystad was born on May 16, 1923 in Garnes township of Red Lake county, the son of Ole and Pauline (Vik) Rystad. He was baptized and confirmed at Salem Lutheran Church near Oklee.

On February 28, 1945 he entered the United States Army and served until his honorable discharge on September 30, 1945. Vernon returned to the family farm where he lived and worked until he retired in 1970 due to ill health. Since March 14, 1997 he had resided at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.

He enjoyed fishing and playing cards.

Vernon is survived by one sister, Myrtle (Donald) Stoneouse of Oklee and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Ann Brandvold and Thelma Dahle; and five brothers, Olaf Rystad, Howard Rystad, Orvin Rystad, Elton Rystad and Melvin Rystad. A00003B1999DC15
