Berto Rynestad, 85

Grand Forks - Berto Rynestad, 85, of 411 5th Avenue North in Grand Forks, ND died Wednesday, July 30, 1997 at Good Samaritan Nursing Center in Larimore, ND.

Berto Rynestad was born September 15, 1911 in Thief River Falls the son of Thor and Berget (Sannes) Rynestad. He attended school in Thief River Falls. The family moved to Grand Forks in 1929. He worked on the family farm and later was employed by Minnesota Dairy.

He served with US Army Company D during WorldWar II from May 1942 to December 1945. He served in North Africa and Italy campaigns. He was the recipient of the American Theater Service ribbon and the European-African-Middle Eastern Service ribbon. Berto was decorated with the Bronze Star Medal for Meritorious achievement ground combat in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater of Operations.

Following the war, he returned to Grand Forks where he was employed by the US Postal Service from 1945 until his retirement in 1972. Berto enjoyed playing golf in the summer months and bowling during the winter months. He was a member of United Lutheran Church and Grand Forks American Legion Post 6.

He is survived by two sisters, Gena T. Bratteli and Agnes Rynestad, both of Grand Forks.

Berto was preceded in death by three brothers, Halvor, Kittel and Fred; and two sisters, Thelma Wirkus and Bernice Wirkus.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 4 at Amundson Funeral Home. Military honors were presented by American Legion Post 6 of Grand Forks. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Amundson Funeral Home of Grand Forks was in charge of the arrangements.
