Ella Roy, 99

Thief River Falls - Ella Roy, 99, died Friday, February 12, 1999 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 20 at Green Funeral Home Chapel in Thief River Falls. Grace Hammer will the organist and soloist. Casketbearers will be Glen Haugen, Jim Dalager, Bill Holmes, Punky Bonamie, Jim Arndt, Tom Cossalter and Bob Grobe. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services on Saturday at the funeral home.

Ella Adeline Johnson was born on March 17, 1899 near Beresford, SD, the daughter of Peter and Hansina (Hanson) Johnson. Her parents were emigrants from Denmark.

On March 4, 1904 Ella moved by train with her family to a farm near St. Hilaire. She grew up there and attended rural school in River Falls township.

In 1919 she was united in marriage to Paul Roy at Thief River Falls. Paul was the chairman of the Pennington County Board of Commissioners for many years and was manager of Thief River Falls Production Credit Association. He died in 1977, and Ella moved to Valley Home in 1987.

While living in St. Hilaire, Ella was an active member of Calvary Lutheran Church. Since moving to Thief River Falls during the 1950's, Ella has been an active member of Zion Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing the piano, and gave many youngsters a start by giving them lessons gratis.

Ella is survived by three sons, Roger (Helen) of Detroit Lakes, Sidney (Joan) of Eveleth, and Dr. James (Ruth) of LaPorte; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one grandson, Robb; five brothers; three sisters; and several nieces and nephews. A00003B1999FB17
