
Erskine - Lola C. Row, 93, died Saturday, September 9, 2000 at First Care Hospital in Fosston.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, September 12, at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Devils Lake, N.D. with Rev. Marvin J. Scherbenske officiating. Casketbearers were Keith Poissant, Dr. Jeffrey Row, Steven Poissant, David Row, Jordan Freemont, Nathan Moe, Ryan Poissant, Ben Poissant and Bruce Moe. Interment was in Devils Lake Cemetery with Gilbertson Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
Lola Catherine Smith was born on April 23, 1907 in Des Moines, Iowa, the daughter of Orville D. and Cora (McCorkle) Smith. At the age of five, she moved with her parents to Bird Island where she spent most of her childhood. Lola graduated from high school at Worthington in 1926 and then attended the University of Iowa, graduating in 1929 with a degree as a registered nurse. She nursed in Iowa, Wisconsin, Minnesota and California before moving to Cando, N.D. where she operated a maternity home for several years.
On January 1, 1933, Lola was united in marriage to Llewellyn Row at Cando. They resided in Cando until the fall of 1940 when they moved to Devils Lake, N.D. Lola worked as the night supervisor at Devils Lake General Hospital and later taught nursing at Mercy Hospital. Her career spanned for more than 42 years. Lola and Llewellyn spent several winters in Mesa, Ariz. prior to his death on April 19, 1982. In 1988, Lola moved to Grand Forks, N.D., making her home at Parkwood Place retirement home until three years ago when she moved to Erskine.
After retiring from nursing, she spent many hours doing volunteer work. Her hobbies included writing poetry and stories, traveling and needlepoint.
Lola was a member of Westminister Presbyterian Church, Presbyterian Womens Association, Order of the Eastern Star since 1926 and Federated Women's Club for 40 years.
Survivors include one son, Ronald L. (Anita) Row of Detroit Lakes; two daughters, Colleen R. Johnson of Minot, N.D. and Bonnie L. (Robert) Poissant of Erskine; 12 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Maxine E. Kron of Hopkins.
Lola was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Earl V. and Harold R. Smith; one grandson, Todd Johnson; and son-in-law, Dr. Curtis Johnson.
