Martin "Bill" Rehm was born on March 9, 1910 in an adobe in Stratton, Colorado, the son of Otto and Carrie (Shepler) Rehm. The Rehms raised cattle on the free range near Stratton until the government discontinued the free range and opened it up for homesteading. At that time the family decided to sell their cattle, and in 1917, they made their way to Nebraska by train. From Omaha they boarded an immigrant train with Minnesota as their destination. They rode in a boxcar with all of their possessions including wagons, household goods, farm machinery and ten horses. The family eventually settled seven miles east of Hazel in Kratka township. There, young Bill helped his dad and brothers clear brush and trees and build the family home.
On November 8, 1936 Bill was united in marriage to Olive Nelson at Bethany Lutheran Church. For many years the couple made their home and farmed in Smiley township. They later moved to Goodridge before moving to their current home in Highlanding township.
Bill enjoyed hunting, fishing, welding, working with animals and farming.
He is survived by his wife, Olive; one sister, Dorothy Kingsbury of Hastings; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Joe and Allen; and two sisters, Elsie Spillman and Marie Hafdahl. A00003B1999MR31
