
Thief River Falls - Lyla Quam, 81, died Sunday, November 26, 2000 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, December 1 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. John Wollenzien officiating. Jan Peterson will be the soloist. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be held Thursday, November 30 from 4 to 8 p.m .with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls and at the church for one hour prior to services on Friday.
Lyla Evangeline Steen was born on June 8, 1919 in Bucyrus, N.D., the daughter of Hans J. and Oline (Aslakson) Steen. She was baptized and confirmed at North Grand Lutheran Church and attended a country school near Bucyrus. She later moved with her family to McIntosh where she graduated from high school in 1936.
On January 18, 1945, Lyla was united in marriage at Long Beach, Calif. to Edwin Quam of McIntosh who was serving in the U.S. Navy. After Edwin's honorable discharge, the couple resided in Minneapolis before moving to Rosewood where they resided from 1947 until 1989 when they moved to Thief River Falls. Lyla worked at Jung's Bakery from 1949 until 1952 and the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center from 1970 until 1975. Edwin died on December 14, 1992.
Lyla and Edwin attended Rindal Lutheran Church until 1963 when they joined Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Lyla was active in Trinity's women's organization, a circle and Golden Years. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Gary (Theresa) Quam of Detroit Lakes; a daughter, Valerie (Jay) Gjernes of Golden Valley; four grandsons; four step grandchildren; three brothers, Clifford (Kay) Quam of Fraser, Mont., Vernon (Adeline) Quam of Thief River Falls and Roy (Clara) Quam of McIntosh; a sister-in-law; a brother-in-law; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Lyla was preceded in death by her husband; parents; three sisters, Bernice Hokenson, Florence Baker and Helen Enerson; and a brother, Walter Steen. A00003B2000NV29
