River Falls - Doris Picolet-Jahnke, 98, died Saturday, July 15,
2000 at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River
Falls.
Funeral services were held at 7 p.m. on Tues-day, July 18 at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with Rev. Paul Knutson officiating. Joy Nordby was the organist and soloist. Casketbearers were Rochelle Fuller, Melissa Hunter, Diane Picolet, Keith Picolet, Melanie Picolet, Vinson Picolet, Sandi Picolet and Kimberly Van Stedum. Honorary casketbearers were Ron Joki, Gordon Moe, Tony Moe, Cynthia Nordby, James Moe, Jill Moe and Wayne Nomeland. Burial will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, July 19) at Pine Ridge Cemetery in Pine River.
Visitation was held Tuesday from 9 a.m. to the time of services at Green Funeral Home.
Doris Leah Shaw was born on January 22, 1902 in Butler County, Iowa near Bristow, the daughter of Bernard and Ida (Crossett) Shaw. She grew up, attended school and was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith near Bristow.
Later the Shaw family moved to Manhattan, Kan. where Doris met and married Casper Onar "Lester" Picolet on November 2, 1918. The couple lived in Kansas, Okaboji, Iowa and near Pierre, S.D. In 1937, they moved to Mildred where they farmed until 1960. Doris also worked as a cook at Pine River School from 1948 until 1958 and was a substitute school bus driver for her husband in the same district. Lester died on May 22, 1969.
On August 5, 1977, she married Ernest Jahnke at Virginia. The couple managed Norway Brook Apartment building in Pine River. Ernest died on January 4, 1991. In April of 1991, Doris moved to Thief River Falls where she resided at Valley Home before moving to the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in 1993.
She was a former member of Grace United Methodist Church in Pequot Lakes and Glory of Day Lutheran Church in Pine River. She enjoyed crocheting, playing cards and Scrabble and spending time with her family.
Doris is survived by three sons, Leonard Picolet of Rescue, Calif., Kenneth (Margaret) Picolet of Mims, Fla. and Bernard (Barbara) Picolet of Grygla; two stepsons, Don (Gertrude) Jahnke and Arden (Harriet) Jahnke, both of Pequot Lakes; one daughter-in-law, Mary (Dick) Mayer of Napa, Calif; eight grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; 16 great- grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by one son, LeRoy Picolet; her parents; three brothers, Robert, Loren and Gilbert Shaw; and one sister, Katie Hight.
