Harry Philipp, 72

Thief River Falls - Harry Philipp, 72, died Saturday, August 5, 2000 at his home in Silverton township of Pennington county.

Funeral services was held at 10:30 a.m. today (Wednesday, August 9) at Silver Creek Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls, with Rev. Jay Borchert officiating. Carmen Gustafson was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Leslie Swanson. Casketbearers were Ryan Philipp, Wallace Philipp, Ronnie Philipp, Chad Knutson, Art Dobias, Elwood Ehrenstrom, Gary Landerville and Gary B. Johnson. Honorary casketbearers were Harry's grandchildren, Ryan, Jami, Robby, Harrison, Corbin, Sara, Beth, Dallas and Barret.

Visitation was held on Tuesday, August 8, from 2 to 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church.

Harry Edward Philipp was born on July 13, 1928 in Grand Plain township of Marshall county, the son of John and Sarah Sophie (Klockman) Philipp. He was baptized and confirmed At Germantown Lutheran Church at Mavie. Harry attended a country school in District 76 before attending the Northwest School of Agriculture in Crookston. Following high school, he worked for the Game and Fish program with the Department of Natural Resources in Roosevelt. He also worked for Wedul Truck Lines and Kiewel Bottling.

He later attended the aviation mechanic program at the Area Vocational Technical Institute, graduating with the program's first class. From 1968 until 1979, he operated Philipp's Aviation and taught aviation mechanics part-time. He had his commercial pilot's license and farmed from 1951 until the time of his death.

On June 25, 1950, Harry was united in marriage to Harriet Sampson in Thief River Falls. The couple raised their family in Pennington and Marshall counties.

He enjoyed his family, especially his grandchildren, and anything to do with aviation.

Harry is survived by his wife; five sons, Roger (Jackie), Dean, Scott (Kim) and Darren (Georgette), all of Thief River Falls, and Jeffrey (Melissa) of Horace, N.D.; nine grandchildren; two brothers, James (Connie) and Vernon (Yvonne), both of Goodridge; and many nieces, nephews and cousins, including Glenn Olson of Yuma, Ariz. who grew up with the Philipp family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ralph, Earl, Charles and Lawrence; two sisters, Edna McFarland and Estelle Haughom; and a cousin, Carl Olson, who also grew up with the Philipp family. A00003B2000AG09
