Sybil Peterson, 74

Newfolden - Sybil Peterson, 74, died Tuesday, August 11, 1998 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, August 15 at 3 p.m. at New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating. Kathy Rokke was the organist, and Craig Swenson and Wendy Blazejewski. Casketbearers were Charles Swenson, Michael Swenson, Craig Swenson, Todd Swenson, Tom Blazejewski, Jerome Peters, Scott Swenson, Marvin Swenson and Edward Bjorgaard. Honorary casketbearers were the Newfolden American Legion Auxiliary. Burial was in the Opdahl Cemetery in New Maine township of Marshall county. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Sybil Gene Swenson was born on January 19, 1924 in Niagara, ND, the daughter of Carl and Olga (Skadsem) Swenson. As a young girl she moved with her family to the Newfolden area where she was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Alma Lutheran Church. She attended rural country schools in Auburn, ND and Argyle before graduating from high school in Argyle in 1942.

After school Sybil moved to Portland, OR where she lived for three years before returning to Argyle. She was united in marriage to Lester Peterson on July 8, 1946.

The couple lived in Grand Forks, ND for four years, in Warren for nine years and for a short while at St. Thomas, ND. In 1959 they moved to Burbank, CA where Sybil worked in electronics manufacturing and as a receptionist at a sports car assembly plant.

In 1967 Sybil and Lester moved to the Newfolden area where they farmed until retiring in 1988. They enjoyed spending the winters together in Mesa, AZ. Lester died on August 10, 1993. Sybil continued to reside in Newfolden and at the Sunrest Mobile Park in Mesa, AZ during the winter months.

She was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church in Newfolden and the American Legion Auxiliary in Newfolden.

Sybil is survived by three brothers, Harvey (Lucy) Swenson of Viking, Clyde (Beverly) Swenson of Newfolden and Morris Swenson of Reno, NV; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and one brother, Roy.
