
Brooks - Anthony Payment, 86, died Sunday, March 19, 2000 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Friday, March 24 at 10:30 a.m. at St Joseph's Catholic Church in Brooks with Father Tim Bushy officiating. Military honors will be accorded by the Plummer American Legion Post. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery near Brooks.
Visitation will be held for one hour prior to services at the church. The Petterson Funeral Home of Red Lake Falls is in charge of the arrangements.
Anthony Joseph Payment was born on December 17, 1913 in Brooks, the son of Ozais and Emelie (Champagne) Payment Sr. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Brooks. He grew up and was educated in the Brooks area.
On January 21, 1942, he entered the U.S. Army, serving overseas during World War II. He was honorably discharged on October 21, 1945 and returned to the Brooks area where he farmed for a short time. He moved to Alaska where he worked in the timber industry for many years. Tony returned to the Brooks area where he worked at for American Crystal Sugar in Crookston for a time and also did odd jobs, including painting and cutting hair, for people in the area.
Tony was a member of the VFW.
He enjoyed fishing, riding his ATV out to the farm, gardening and canning.
Anthony is survived by one sister, Betty Schmidt in Arizona, and several nieces and nephews, including James Payment of Mentor and Xavier Payment of Red Lake Falls.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ozais Payment Jr., Napoleon Payment, Philip Payment and Tennis Payment; and four sisters, Della Kershaw, Laura Lizotte, Rose Fournier and Antoinette Payment. A00003B2000MR22
