Grygla - Dorothy Nordby, 89, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Celebration of life services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 24 at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with Reverend Paul Knutson officiating. Gloria Sistad was the organist, and special music was provided by her grandchildren.

Casketbearers were Dorothy's grandsons, Greg Erickson, Paul Nordby, John Nordby, Robert Nordby, Richard Nordby, Bruce Nordby, Jeremy Nordby, Steve Anderson, Scott Anderson, Tim Anderson and Perry Lee. Honorary casketbearers were her granddaughters, Kristine Rowley, Kathy Flatt, Lori Hayes, Lisa Suttie, Gwen Belvedere, Sandra Knutson, Denise Ostby, Sherri Larson and Juanita Hagen. Burial was in Valle Lutheran Cemetery in Benville township of Beltrami county. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Dorothy Julia Tveten was born on January 17, 1910 in Valley township of Marshall county, the daughter of Oscar and Alice (Gunderson) Tveten. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf Lutheran Church and attended District 94 Bekkerus School in rural Grygla. Dorothy worked on the family farm and also worked as a farmer and homemaker's helper in the Goodridge area and Glyndon area.

On June 25, 1930 she was united in marriage to Arthur Nordby at the Grygla Lutheran parsonage by Reverend S.T. Anderson. The couple moved to a farm in Benville township of Beltrami county where they farmed until 1973 when they moved to Grygla. Arthur died on February 5, 1984. In 1992 Dorothy moved into the Whitehouse in Grygla, and since suffering a stroke in November of 1998, she has resided at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Dorothy was a long-time, active member of Valle and Grace Lutheran Churches, and she was involved in all aspects of the Grygla Senior Citizens organization.

She enjoyed being with people, playing games, baking, doing fancy work, music and flowers. She was the neighborhood barber for many years and caregiver to her parents, in-laws, family and neighbors.

She is survived by three daughters, Ardith "Ardy" (Gerald) Erickson of Cedar Rapids, IA, Marie Anderson (special friend Wayne Konickson) of Grygla, and Carol (Leland) Lee of St. Cloud; two sons, Orvis (Shirley) Nordby and Roy (Joy) Nordby, both of Grygla; 20 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; several brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur; her parents; one brother, Howard; one sister, Myrtle Jones; one grandson, Dale Anderson; and one great-grandson, Sean Rowley. A00003B1999AR28
