
Bemidji - Gladyce Nielson, 79, died Saturday, September 6, 1997 at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji.
Memorial services were at 3 p.m. September 9 at the United Methodist Church in Bemidji with Reverend James Clausen officiating. Disposition was by cremation, under the direction of the Cease Family Funeral Home of Bemidji.
Gladyce Agnes Gustafson was born on March 2, 1918 in Trail to Axel and Anne (Florence) Gustafson. She was raised and educated in the Trail area. She graduated from high school in 1936 from Crookston Agricultural College and in 1940 from Northern Business School in Bemidji. For several years she worked as a secretary-stenographer for the War Department in Washington, DC before transferring to Detroit.
On March 4, 1944 Gladyce married Darrel Nielson in Bowling Green, KY. Following World War II, the couple moved to Bemidji and lived there until 1958 when they moved to Lovell, WY where they owned and operated a hardware store. In 1960, they moved to Billings, MT where they operated a motel and apartment house until 1969 when they moved back to the family homestead in Trail and farmed for several years. In 1987, they moved to their cottage on Lake Plantagenet and wintered in Arizona.
Gladyce was a member of the United Methodist Church. She enjoyed time with her family, golf, fishing and shuffleboard.
In addition to her husband, Darrel, she is survived by one son, Jack (Helen) Nielson of Anchorage, AK; five grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Howard of Thief River Falls; two brothers, Marvin Gustafson of Thief River Falls and Arlie Gustafson of McIntosh; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gladyce was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Gustaf.
