
Ethel Nielsen, 94
Crookston - Ethel Nielsen, 94, died Sunday, September 17, 2000 at Villa St. Vincent Nursing Home in Crookston.
Services will be held on Friday, September 22, at 10:30 a.m. at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston with Rev. Steve Bohler officiating. Interment will be in Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston.
Visitation will be held Thursday, September 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home in Crookston. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services on Friday.
Ethel Slager was born on May 14, 1906 in Tolley, N.D., the daughter of Jake and Junia (Von Wald) Slager. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. After the death of her father when she was seven years old, Ethel moved with her mother to Holt where she attended school. When Ethel was 15, her mother died, and she moved to Red Lake Falls where she attended high school. The following year she moved to Westby, Mont. where she attended school. She then moved back to Minnesota and lived at Euclid.
On March 2, 1927, she was united in marriage to Clarence W. Nielsen at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Crookston. The couple farmed near Euclid for several years, and Clarence later went to work for the Polk County Highway Department. In 1958, Ethel began working at St. Francis Hospital in Crookston, retiring in 1970 when the hospital closed. In the mid-1960s, the couple moved from Euclid to Crookston. Clarence died on April 30, 1987.
Ethel was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and enjoyed attending Bible study. She also enjoyed reading and crocheting.
Survivors include five sons, Leroy (Anna) Nielsen of Baudette, Dr. Andrew (Thea) Nielsen of Oakview, Calif., Clarence (Janet) Nielsen Jr. of Pinellas Park, Fla., Richard (Bebe) Nielsen of Newnan, Ga. and Lester (June) Nielsen of Plymouth; three daughters, Elaine (Dit) Ditlovson of Jacksonville, Fla., LaVonne Amundson of Superior, Wisc. and Elsie (Denny) Hagen of Lakeville; 26 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; three great great-grandchildren; one brother, Chester Slager of Crookston; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Ethel was preceded in death by her husband; parents; infant son, Melvin Nielsen; a grandson, Mitch Nielsen; a brother, Henry Slager; and a sister, Mildred Owens.
