
Jamestown, ND - Wallace J. "Wally" Nelson, 71, died Saturday, April 24, 1999 at his home in rural Jamestown, ND.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, April 27 at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Jamestown, ND with Reverend Charles Horsager officiating. Dorothy Ordal was the organist. The pianist was Shirley Sprenger, and she and Heidi Carlson were the soloists. Casketbearers were Milton Unruh, Warren Bettenhausen, Loren Ordal, Wayne Monson, Leroy Deutcher and Rory Metz. Burial was in Highland Home Cemetery in Jamestown, ND. The Eddy Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
Wallace J. Nelson was born March 11, 1928 in Newfolden, the son of Alfred and Melvida (Johnson) Nelson. He grew up and attended school in Newfolden, graduating from high school in 1946. Following graduation, he attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, NE. Wally worked for his great-uncle, Carl Hjelle, on the family farm in Stephen and later at a Stephen grocery store.
On November 26, 1949 he married Doris Forland in Newfolden. The couple moved to Thief River Falls in 1953 where Wally worked for Land O'Lakes. They later moved to Fargo, ND where he began working for the Burroughs Corp. He transferred to Bismarck, ND for two years, and the couple moved to Jamestown in 1958 where he continued to work for the Burroughs Corporation as a service technician, retiring in 1985.
To the age of 69, he continued to enjoy playing wally ball. Wally also enjoyed working on tractors, doing yard work, going to auction sales, traveling, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. He did the yard work at Frontier Village and delivered Meals on Wheels.
Wally is survived by his wife, Doris Nelson, of Jamestown, ND; three sons, Don Nelson of San Diego, CA, Wayne (Carol) Nelson of Fairberry, IL, and Keith (Deanne) Nelson of Marshall; one daughter, Pam (Dwayne) Moench of Hutchinson; 13 grandchildren; two brothers, Maynard Nelson of Richfield and Romaine (Joyce) Nelson of St. Louis Park; one sister, Arlyss (Arnold) Olsen of White Bear Lake; and one half brother, Vernon Hamberg of South St. Paul.
