Harry Nelson, 81

Strathcona - Harry Nelson, 81, died Friday, September 3, 1999 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, September 7 at Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church in Strathcona with Pastor John Jorgensen officiating. Barb Geer was the pianist, and Marie Olson was the soloist. Casketbearers were Ray Hanson, Verne Nelson, Gene Connelly, Roman Thompson, Melroy Wiskow and Orin Coltom. Military honors were accorded by the Middle River American Legion Post 444. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Strathcona with Collins Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.

Harry Arthur Nelson was born on August 8, 1918 in Huss township of Roseau county near Strathcona, the son of Albert and Anna (Larson) Nelson. He grew up and attended school in the Strathcona area and was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. For several years he was employed on area farms.

Harry served in the U.S. Army from November 1942 until February 1946, serving in Germany and France. Following discharge, he returned to Strathcona.

On March 28, 1947 he was united in marriage to Doris Haines at Thief River Falls. The couple resided at Strathcona for two years and then in Northome where Harry cut pulp wood for a year. They then moved to their farm in Huss township near Strathcona where they have since made their home.

Harry was a member of Gustaf Adolph Lutheran Church of Strathcona and the Middle River American Legion and Badger V.F.W. For several years he was employed by the Conrad Dahl farm and John Bogestad farm, both in Kennedy. He retired from farming in the spring of 1978.

Survivors include his wife, Doris; one daughter, Carol (Mark) Ennenga of St. Louis Park; two sons, Ronald of Frenchtown, MT and Duane of Greenbush; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred (James) Carriere of Middle River and Irene (Willard) Clow of Aztec, NM; and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Evelyn Voecks. A00003B1999SP08
