
Thief River Falls - Evelyn Nelson, 93, died Thursday, January 8, 1998 at her home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 12 at 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church with Reverend Dennis Raymond officiating. Ida Nordvall was the organist. Casketbearers were Kip Vigness, Wes Johnson, Dayton Silk, Paul Spielman, Don Narverud and Brad Nelson. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Evelyn Martha Peterson was born on July 2, 1904 in Mullen, ID, the daughter of Oscar and Emma (Skaug) Peterson. She was baptized in the Lutheran faith on July 14, 1918 and later confirmed in that faith. In 1909 the family moved to River Falls township, Pennington County. Evelyn attended country school near their home.
On June 12, 1926 Evelyn was united in marriage to Edwin Nelson at her parents' home near Hazel. The couple farmed in Smiley township until Edwin died in 1960. After her husband's death Evelyn moved into Thief River Falls for a short time and then to Sacramento, CA for five years. In 1971 she returned to Thief River Falls where she worked in the alterations department at Bjorkmans Clothing Store. She also sewed for others. Evelyn resided at the Hartz Apartments for many years and most recently at Riverside Terrace in Thief River Falls.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and was very active in the Quilting Guild and Zion Fellowship. She enjoyed quilting and traveling to California to visit family.
Evelyn is survived by one son, Orville (Doris) Nelson of Thief River Falls; one daughter, Lois Ofstedahl of Yuba City, CA; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; two sisters, Delores Bishop of Arcata, CA and Norma Womack of Sacramento, CA; and one brother, Julius (Cleone) Peterson of Hood, CA.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; son-in-law, John Ofstedahl; four sisters, Clara Posehn, Agnes Hanson, D'vern Jernigan and Marie Gustafson; three brothers, Casper, Robert and John Peterson; one grandson, Jerry Ofstedahl; and two great-grandchildren, Jennifer Rubio and Ariel Johnsrud.
