
Red Lake Falls - Alving Nelson, 90, died Wednesday, September 1, 1999 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in Red Lake Falls.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, 1999 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls with Reverend Gary Graff officiating. Dean Berend was the soloist, and Joe and Susan Asp presented a vocal duet. Casketbearers were Dean Berend, Monte Burstad, Brian Shefchik, Mark Senn, Mike Nelson and Mike Moonen. All of Al's grandchildren were honorary casketbearers. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery in Red Lake Falls. The Petterson Funeral Home of Red Lake Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Alving "Al" Leonard Nelson was born on July 1, 1909 in Bowesmont, ND, the son of John L. and Ida (Ronberg) Nelson. He was raised in the Warren and Angus areas where he attended rural school and worked on area farms.
On November 27, 1933 he was united in marriage to Vanilla "Nelle" Marquis in Crookston. In the mid-1940's the couple moved to Red Lake Falls. Al worked as a foreman for the June Grass Seed Co. in St. Hilaire and then worked for Wilcox Furniture in Red Lake Falls for over 20 years. Nelle died on April 24, 1999.
He enjoyed raising and racing horses.
Al is survived by four daughters, Joan (Eldon) Burstad of Menomonic, WI, Marilyn (Marvin) Johnson of Jones, OK, Karen Moonen (friend Harry Bell) of Rush City, and Dianna (Dr. Owen) Nelson of Red Lake Falls; one son, Mark (Sharon) Nelson of Red Lake Falls; 21 grandchildren; and 36 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; three brothers, Irving Nelson, Russell Nelson and Shelby Nelson; and two sisters, Idora Thompson and Lilly Bruer. A00003B1999SP08
