Edward Needham, 73

Thief River Falls - Edward Needham, 73, died Friday, August 6, 1999 at his home in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, August 10 at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls with Father Dennis Wieland officiating. Laura Brickson and Shelly Burkel were the musicians, and Rachel Cervin was the soloist. Casketbearers were Edward's grandchildren, Terra Linn, Michele Needham, Rachel Cervin, Brock Needham, Seth Cervin and Scott Needham. Burial was in St. Bernard's Cemetery in Thief River Falls with military rites accorded by the Thief River Falls VFW and American Legion Posts. The Green Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.

Edward Needham was born on June 12, 1926 in St. Paul, the son of Daniel P. and Jessie (Burnett) Needham. He was baptized at St. Mary's Mission and grew up and attended school in Redlake. He worked at the saw mill in Redby and as a logger before entering the U.S. Navy. He served on the USS Brookings in 1944 and as a coxswain in the Pacific Theatre. Following his honorable discharge in 1946 he farmed with his parents east of Goodridge.

On April 15, 1950 Edward was united in marriage to Rose M. Reese at St. Bernard's Catholic Church in Thief River Falls. The couple made their home in Beltrami county on the west end of the Red Lake Indian Reservation where they operated a diversified farm.

He was a member of St. Bernard's Catholic Church and the VFW. He enjoyed hunting, trapping and fishing and worked as a hunting guide for many years. With many interests, he also worked as a mason, carpenter and peace pipe maker.

Edward is survived by his wife, Rose of Thief River Falls; one son, Michael (Sue) Needham of Devils Lake, ND; two daughters, Debra (Dave) Cork of Thief River Falls and Cynthia (Rolf) Cervin of Sand Point, ID; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
