
Roseau - Nellie Kristina Mattson, 93, died Saturday, February 22, 1997 at the Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home in Roseau. Arrangements were with Helgeson Funeral Chapel of Roseau.
Funeral services were held Monday, February 24 at the First Lutheran Church in Salol with Rev. Frank Livingston officiating. Burial will be in the spring in Spruce Cemetery in Roseau.
Nellie was born on December 19, 1903 in Vesterbotten, Sweden, the daughter of Kristina (Linblad) and Erick Mattson. As an infant, she immigrated to the United States with her mother, joining her father who had come here the previous year. They homesteaded north of Salol where she attended school. Following the completion of eighth grade in Roseau, she attended the Physicians Hospital School of Nursing in Thief River Falls for 18 months. She received her RN degree at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, specializing in public health. She was employed in that field for 39 and one-half years in Chicago, IL, working for many years at the Contagious Hospital and Cook County. She retired in the late 80's after 60 years of service. At the time of her retirement she was a supervisor of the pediatrics ward of the terminally ill at Cook County Hospital. Since then, she made her home with her sister and brother, Ida and Clifford on the home farm in Salol. The past two years where she has spent at Sheltering Oaks Nursing Home in Roseau.
She is survived by sisters Lillian (Joe) Zimmer of Salol, Anna Strandlund of Roseau, and Ellen M. Spray of Thief River Falls; brother Clifford Mattson of Salol; and sister-in-law Mabel Mattson of Minneapolis; and nine nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers Erick, Helge, Jonas Edwin and Arthur; sister Ida Mattson; brothers-in-law Elmer Strandlund and W. Lloyd Spray; and nephew Ronald.
