John Lindenmeyer, 84

Fairfax, VA - John H. Lindenmeyer, 84, died Saturday, June 5, 1999 at Fairfax Nursing Center in Fairfax, VA from complications of a stroke.

John H. Lindenmeyer was born in Tullula, IL and earned bachelor and masters degrees from the University of Iowa where he played varsity football and basketball and ran track.

He married former Thief River Falls resident and Lincoln High School home economics teacher Rosine Dahlen. John taught and coached football and basketball at Lincoln High School in the late 1930's and 40's prior to World War II.

During World War II, Lt. Col. Lindenmeyer was a B-29 navigator, flying in the Pacific theater and participating in the fire bombing of Tokyo. After the war his many assignments included McCord Air Force Base (AFB), Great Falls AFB, Maxwell AFB and Bentwaters Royal AFB, England.

After a 22-year military career which included teaching ROTC at Franklin College, Marshall College and Purdue University, Col. Lindenmeyer retired and began a second career as a tenured professor of political science at the University of Tampa for 10 years.

Survivors include a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Dahlen Howick of Thief River Falls. John is also survived by a sister, Ruth Taylor of Gig Harbor; two daughters, Catherine Gaugler and Gretchen Coffey, both of Vienna, VA; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and two brothers-in-law.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Rosine Dahlen Lindenmeyer, in 1990. A00003B1999JN30
