
Thief River Falls - Mildred Kverno, 89, died Friday, August 14, 1998 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, August 18 at 11 a.m. at Abundant Life Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend Wesley Langaas officiating. Bev Kays was the organist, and piano music was provided by Mike Melby. Soloists were Jackie Helms and Noelle Rude. Casketbearers were all of the family members and friends in attendance. Burial was in Oakdale Cemetery in Crookston. The Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Mildred Gladys Johnson was born on February 10, 1909 in Crookston, the daughter of Leonard and Belle Johnson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She grew up in the Fertile and Crookston areas and attended and graduated from high school. She spent some time working at the Old Mill Cafe and playing the piano for a local band.
She was united in marriage to Clarence Kverno on May 9, 1932. The couple lived in Fargo, ND and Crookston before moving to Thief River Falls in 1938 where they made their home, and Mildred worked part-time at the Corner Grocery Store. Mildred continued to live in Thief River Falls after Clarence died on March 19, 1981.
Mildred was devoted to her church and its activities, circles and teaching Sunday School for many years. A member of the Thief River Falls Sons of Norway Lodge, she served as its secretary for many years and played the piano for many functions there. She was also a charter member of her neighborhood friends sewing club.
She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting, embroidery, cooking, baking Scandinavian delicacies and spending time with family and friends. She also enjoyed the family cabin at Shotley Brook and fishing.
Mildred is survived by one son, Don (Sue) Kverno of Kelliher; one daughter, Gail (James) Rude of Thief River Falls; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Vida Olson of Grand Forks, ND; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; one sister, Hazel Stempfley; one brother, Stan Johnson, and one infant grandson, Rickie Rude.
