Gerda Knutson, 95

Goodridge - Gerda Knutson, 95, died Wednesday, June 16, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m on Tuesday, June 22 at Telemarken Lutheran Church in Goodridge with Reverend Raynard Huglen officiating. Interment was in the Telemarken Cemetery at Goodridge. The Helgeson Funeral Chapel of Warroad was in charge of the arrangements.

Gerda Oline Hegrenes was born on August 7, 1903 to Johannes and Marit (Olson, Beito and Kveto) Hegrenes at Fargo, ND. She was baptized in Fargo and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the Norwegian Church in Thief River Falls. Gerda completed eight grades at Elwell School in Silverton township of Pennington county and attended Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. For five years, she was employed at Oakland Sanitarium in Thief River Falls.

On November 16, 1935, Gerda and Knute S. Knutson were united in marriage at Mavie. The couple lived in Goodridge where they farmed and raised their family. Knute died on June 28, 1984.

Gerda was a member of Telemarken Lutheran Church where she was a member of the ladies aid and taught Sunday school for several years.

She enjoyed gardening, cooking and baking. As a young girl, Gerda learned the art of tatting and took an interest in designing some of her clothes. She was also interested in nursing and helped bring many babies into the world. She especially enjoyed her family.

Gerda is survived by one son, Sheldon (Eloda) of Goodridge; two daughters, Ruby (Clary) Smith of Minneapolis and Gayle (Earl) Mathison of Wadena; three grandchildren; two great grandchildren; three sisters, Olga Nelson of Thief River Falls and Hazel Oden and Doris Senstad, both of Minneapolis; one brother, Bennie (Laura) Hegrenes of Ada; one sister-in-law; and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one grandson, Ronald Smith; four sisters, Selma Westby, Christine Barstad, Anna Leiran and Mildred Hegrenes; and three brothers, Joseph, Henry and Casper Hegrenes. A00003B1999JN23
