
Fergus Falls - Fred Kavanaugh, 77, died Thursday, June 11, 1998 at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Funeral services will be held today (Wednesday, June 17) at 2 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls with Reverend Robert Possehl officiating. Military rites were accorded by the Fergus Falls VFW and American Legion. Burial will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday, June 18 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Visitation was held from 3 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday.
Fred Kavanaugh was born on January 6, 1921 in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, the son of Frederick and Mary (Arnold) Kavanaugh. He grew up in the Thief River Falls area where he attended school.
Fred served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne, U.S. Army, from 1942 to 1945. He saw action in Normandy, Holland and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star among many other military honors.
On December 10, 1945 he married Ina Torgerson of Clearbrook in Minneapolis. They lived in Thief River Falls for a short time before moving to Fergus Falls over 40 years ago. They also had a home on Otter Tail Lake.
Fred worked for 27 years as a salesman for Foremost McKesson Drug Co. before retiring in 1983.
He was a past commander of the VFW Post in Thief River Falls.
Fred is survived by his wife, Ina of Fergus Falls; one son, Thomas (Bonnie) Kavanaugh of Fargo, ND; two brothers, William (Kitty) of St. Paul and Walter (Doris) of St. Petersburg, FL; three sisters, Frances Nelson of Spencer, IA, Mary Johnson of Bloomington and Evelyn (Carl) Nelson of Citrus Heights, CA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
