Charles Joyce, 82

Thief River Falls - Charles Joyce, 82, died Thursday, May 7, 1998 at the CNC Unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held on Monday, May 11 at 1:30 p.m. at the Green Funeral Chapel in Thief River Falls with Reverend Al Gjerde officiating. Joyce Halbasch was the organist, and Virgil and Marville Hjelle sang a duet. Casketbearers were Donovaon Dyrdal, Martin Solseng, Irvin Iverson, Don Rustad, Jay Johnson and Albert Koop. Military honors were accorded by the American Legion and VFW Posts of Thief River Falls. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery in Norden township of Pennington county.

Charles Edwin Joyce was born on March 3, 1916 in Randolph, NE, the son of George B. and Marie (Kleven) Joyce. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. As a child he moved with his parents to a homestead just east of Thief River Falls. They later moved to Norden township west of Thief River Falls where they continued to farm. Charlie helped to organize the Oak Ridge Sunday school. He taught parochial school and was an active member of the Pocket Testament League. He attended and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls in 1935.

Charlie served in the CC Camps in several areas of northern Minnesota. He entered the U.S. Army and returned to Thief River Falls after receiving his honorable discharge. He went to work for Nash Finch, moving with the company to Grand Forks and Fargo. After retirement, he moved back to Thief River Falls.

Survivors include two sisters, Jessie Johnson of Boulder City, NV and Hazel Anderson of Baineville, MT; one sister-in-law, Eleanor Joyce of Thief River Falls; and several nieces and nephews, including Al Gjerde of Thief River Falls.

Charles was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Clifford, George and Chester; and one sister, Minnie.
