
Thief River Falls - Elizabeth "Libby" Jones, 90, died Friday, March 24, 2000 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, March 30 at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Rev. Dan Horn officiating. Barb Hauger will be the organist, and the soloist will be Grace Hammer. Casketbearers will be Libby's grandchildren, Charles Jones, Philip Jones, Elizabeth Jones, Michael Jones, Matthew Jones, Evan Spencer Jones, William Whary and Holly Whary. Honorary casketbearers will be her former students.
Visitation will be held today (Wednesday, March 29) from 3 to 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Elizabeth Baldwin McBride was born on December 30, 1909 in Ahmednagar, India, the daughter of Arthur A. and Elizabeth Hubbard (Viles) McBride. Libby's initial schooling was at Kodai School in India. At the age of 12, she came to Austin where she lived with her aunt, Anne Nicholson, until she graduated from Austin High School in 1927.
She attended Carlton College in Northfield where she was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honorary Society. She graduated in 1931, earning her Bachelor of Arts degree in history and English. She taught high school in Park Rapids.
On July 24, 1937, Libby was united in marriage to Norris Quentin Jones in Minneapolis. The couple resided in Park Rapids until 1942 when they moved to Thief River Falls where Quentin taught and Libby raised their family. In the late 1950s, Libby returned to teaching junior high school students until her retirement at age 65 in 1975. The couple continued to reside in Thief River Falls.
Libby enjoyed gardening, camping, playing bridge and in her later years, walking with her canine companion, Kirby.
She was very active in community events and was a member of the United Methodist Church, a garden club, Retired Teachers Association and worked with the Meals on Wheels program. While raising her family, she found time to share her husband's interest in scouting by serving as a den mother for many years.
Survivors include four sons, Evan M. Jones of St. Cloud, Kenneth A. Jones of Silver Spring, MD, David M. Jones of Oshkosh, WI and Thomas Q. Jones of Indianapolis, IN; eight grandchildren and their mothers; one sister, Leslie (Marshall) Freerks of Kirkwood, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
Libby was preceded in death by her husband, Quentin in 1997; one daughter, Elizabeth; one son, Charles; her parents; and two sisters, Esther Palmer and Jeanette Warner. A00003B2000MR29
