Clifford Johnson, 81

Thief River Falls - Clifford Johnson, 81, died Friday, October 8, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 12 at Bethel Lutheran Church in Greenbush with Rev. Ernie Christensen officiating. Joan Haugen was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Marie Olson. Casketbearers were Engvald Rud, Don Wicklund, Ernest Hemp, Reuben Flaten, Roman Thompson, David Foss, Marlo Nelson and Maynard Olson. Military honors were provided by Moen-Zimek American Legion Post 88 of Greenbush. Burial was in Bethel Lutheran Cemetery in Greenbush. The Gieseke Funeral Chapel was in charge of the arrangements.

Clifford Harry Johnson was born on September 28, 1918 in Deer township of Roseau county, the son of Alexander "Sander" and Bessie (Christoferson) Johnson. He attended rural School District 68 and was baptized and confirmed at Poplar Grove Church near his home.

Clifford served in the U.S. Army from 1941 until 1945 and was stationed in the Asiatic Pacific Theater for a year and a half.

On October 26, 1946 he married Irene Braaten of Strathcona at Thief River Falls. The couple lived in Greenbush where Clifford worked as a mechanic at Greenbush Implement and as an electrician's helper for Harley Anderson Electric of Greenbush. In 1950 they moved to a farm near Strathcona where he farmed for many years. They moved to Thief River Falls three years ago.

Clifford was a supervisor on the Deer township board for many years, a one-time board member of Bethel Lutheran Church, and a member of Greenbush Co-op Grain and Seed for 25 years. He was also a member of Moen-Zimek American Legion Post 88 of Greenbush.

Survivors include his wife, Irene of Thief River Falls; one son, Dale (Jean) of Holt; one daughter, Randi Johnson of Brooklyn Park; two grandchildren; one sister, Mabel Stromlund of Peoria, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Clifford was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister. A00003B1999OT13
