Carl Johnson, 87

Thief River Falls - Carl Johnson, 87, died Friday, April 24, 1998 in the CNC unit at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 28 at the Evangelical Free Church in Newfolden with Reverend Gary Barrett officiating. Judy Hogberg was the organist. Lowell and Donna Mae Hogberg sang a duet. Casketbearers were Nels Holmberg, Delbert Erickson, Merle Bjornrud, Floyd Hanson, Bob Dahl and Larry Bjorsness. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery near Newfolden. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Carl Johnson was born on March 9, 1911 in Red Wing, the son of Emil and Anna (Christianson) Johnson. At the age of two, he moved to Strandquist where he grew up.

On June 10, 1939 Carl was united in marriage to Gladys Andeen at Warren. The couple farmed in West Valley township near Strandquist before moving to Strandquist in 1951 where Carl operated a Conoco service station and bulk oil business. Carl continued the bulk oil business after the service station was destroyed by an explosion in 1972. He also drove school bus for several years and worked on road construction. He was member of the school board. Carl and Gladys moved to Thief River Falls in 1994, and Carl moved to the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in 1995.

Following his retirement, Carl enjoyed gardening and tending his lawn and flowers. He was active at church and taught Sunday school for a number of years.

Carl is survived by his wife, Gladys; one son, Roger (Stephanie) Johnson; one daughter, Judy (Dave) Munro; two granddaughters; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, George, Martin, Adolph, Norman and Charley; and two sisters, Frances Cook and Jennie Swain.
