Bertha Johnson, 90

Minneapolis - Bertha Maijala Johnson, 90, died Saturday, December 4, 1999 at Mt. Olive Nursing Home in Minneapolis.

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, December 8 at the nursing home chapel. Interment was in Crystal Lake Cemetery in north Minneapolis.

Bertha Sylvia Maijala was born on February 1, 1909 in Eveleth, the daughter of Solomon and Rina (Hatanpaa) Maijala. During Bertha's childhood the family moved to Middle River.

On October 10, 1932 she was united in marriage to Ingvald Johnson. The couple farmed in East Valley township of Marshall county until 1959 when they moved to Minneapolis. While residing there, they were active at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Holt.

Bertha enjoyed sewing, cooking and earthy Finnish humor.

She was a member of Minnehaha Communion Lutheran Church in Minneapolis.

Bertha is survived by her husband, Ingvald; two sons, Walfrid Johnson of Aiea Heights, HI and Marshall D. Johnson of Minneapolis; one daughter, Sylvia Caesar of Federal Way, WA; three sisters, Martha Koontz, Olga Massie and Alice Watson; one brother, Edwin Maijala; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Bernard Maijala, Raymond Maijala, Thomas Maijala, William Maijala and Donald Maijala; and one sister, Elma Bonetto. A00003B1999DC22
