Arthur Johnson, 88

Gatzke - Arthur N. Johnson, 88, died Wednesday, January 26, 2000 at the CNC unit of Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday, February 2) at United Lutheran Church in Gatzke with Rev. Sandra Hollands officiating. Gloria Sistad will be the organist, and Grace Hammer will be the soloist. Casketbearers will be Mike Hedemark, Ron Rasmussen, Keith Rasmussen, Earling Lian, Merle Naeseth, Lowell Naeseth, Gene Engen and Howard Lunsetter. Burial will be in Moose River Cemetery in Gatzke.

Visitation was held from 2 to 8 p.m on Tuesday, February 1 at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls.

Arthur Noreen Johnson was born on August 27, 1911 in Gatzke, the son of Theodore and Olive (Torgerson) Johnson. He was baptized in the Lutheran faith in Gatzke where he grew up and attended school. He was a farmer in the Gatzke area and also worked as a carpenter and for the Thief Lake Wildlife Management Area.

On December 27, 1939 he was united in marriage to Amanda Louise Maanum at the courthouse in Thief River Falls. The couple continued to live and farm in the Gatzke area.

Arthur was active in the community, involved in the Farmers Union and with Gatzke Lutheran Church. He also served on the Rollis Town board for a number of years.

He enjoyed music and playing the accordion, especially traditional Norwegian music.

Arthur is survived by one daughter, Arlyne (Mike) Hedemark of Vientiane, Laos, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Amanda; two brothers, Arnold and Agner Johnson; and four sisters, Myrtle Naeseth, Viola Bonde, Ethel Lian and Lyleth Stangfield.
