
Grygla - Harry Johaneson, 79, died Saturday, March 21 at his home in Grygla.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 24 at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with Reverend Roberta Johnson officiating. Joy Nordby was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Audrey Burda. Harry's grandaughter, Tracy Dickovich, presented a reading. Casketbearers were Arden Thomas, Gordon Saul, Roger Anderson, Wallace Sistad, Gary Skibicki and Harlan Bergeron. Honorary casketbearers were Tracy Dickovich, Rhonda Land, Cheryl Skibicki, Shannon Skibicki, Melissa Bergeron, Jacob Johaneson, Brent Skibicki, Jessa Johaneson, Cindy Skibicki, Travis Bergeron, Corey Bergeron and Zachary Johaneson. Burial was in Our Savior's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Hamre township of Beltrami county. Military honors were provided by the VFW and American Legion Posts of Grygla. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Harry Wilbur Johanneson was born on June 15, 1918 in mining camp housing near Hibbing, the son of Otto and Vera (O'Dell) Johaneson. He was baptized at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Hibbing on June 15, 1918. Harry lived in Hibbing for 11 years and then moved to McGregor for two years. The family then moved to Hamre township in Beltrami county where Harry grew to adulthood. He attended Washington School in Hibbing, rural school in McGregor, the Hamre township schools for two years and high school in Puposky for two years. He later earned his G.E.D. diploma.
Harry entered the United States Navy on April 13, 1942 at Minneapolis. Following two months of boot camp in San Diego, CA, his orders took him to radio school for four months in Madison, WI. He served in the Pacific for two and one-half years and was in Boston, MA for a short time. He was honorably discharged on October 2, 1945 at Minneapolis.
On June 8, 1945 Harry was united in marriage to Alice Anderson at our Savior's Lutheran Church at Grygla. Following his discharge from the military, the couple lived and farmed in Lee township of Beltrami county. He also worked at Farmer's Union for 18 years, worked construction for building contractors, drove school bus, and also owned and operated his own backhoe service.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church of rural Grygla, the Grygla Lions and VFW Post 3858.
Harry is survived by his wife, Alice; three sons, Michael (Carol) Johaneson of Boise, ID, Wayne Johaneson of Thief River Falls and Donald (Linda) Johaneson of Delano; two daughters, Linda (Gary) Skibicki of Duluth and Phyllis (Harlan) Bergeron of Shell Lake, WI; 12 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Art (Barbara) Johaneson of Babbit; two sisters, Kathleen (Jelle) Jorgen of Springfield, MO and Margaret Folkedahl of Cook; special sister-in-law, Thea Anderson and her family; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one grandson, Casey Johaneson on May 19, 1996.
