Bertha Hughes, 83

Thief River Falls - Bertha Hughes, 83, died Monday, January 4, 1999 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 8 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer with Reverend Clarence Johnson officiating. Linda Olson was the organist, and vocal music was provided by Laura Toren and Merlin and Judy Carlson.

Casketbearers were Brad Hughes, Daniel Hughes, Brian Schindler, Brian Burns, Eddie Eskeli and Don Fox. Burial was in Hillside Cemetery in Walhalla, ND. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Bertha Ingeborg Thompson was born on December 4, 1915 in Svold, North Dakota, the daughter of Christian and Rebecca (Benson) Thompson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran church at Svold and attended schools in Park River and Cavalier, ND.

On September 16, 1938 Bertha was united in marriage to Arnold Hughes at Mountain, ND. The couple lived in the Backoo, ND area where they farmed and Arnold managed a grain elevator. The couple moved to Buxton, ND where they farmed and Grafton before moving to Minnesota in 1963 where they operated a resort in Cass Lake. In 1969 Bertha and Arnold moved to the Plummer area. In 1995 Bertha moved to Thief River Falls where she resided at Pioneer Court and more recently at Oakland Park and Valley Home.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and its women's group and the Homemaker's Club. She enjoyed quilting and sewing.

Bertha is survived by two daughters, Mary Ellen (Tom) Kutz of Plymouth and Priscilla (Terry) Ryding of Spokane, WA; one son, Roger (Connie) Hughes of Plummer; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Rose Mack of Sioux Falls, SD and Carrie Carlson of Phoenix, AZ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arnold; her parents; one infant grandson; and four brothers, George, Tom, Harvey and Ben Thompson.
