Oliver Howland, 98

Grygla - Oliver Howland, 98, died Wednesday, August 2, 2000 at Warroad Care Center in Warroad.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, August 7 at Howland, Oliver color Grace Lutheran Church in Grygla with Rev. Paul Knutson officiating. Joy Nordby was the organist. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls. Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.

Oliver Howland was born on April 29, 1902 in Hamre township of Beltrami county, the son of Benhard and Anna (Grande) Howland. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior's Lutheran Church near Grygla and attended a rural country school. Oliver moved to Kansas City, Mo. where he attended an automotive and electrical school, graduating at the age of 19. He returned to rural Grygla and operated the family farm until 1994 when he moved to Grygla. Serine died on August 17, 1992.

Oliver was united in marriage to Serine Tanem on June 28, 1927 in Red Lake Falls. In addition to farming, he also had a welding shop and worked as an electrician and carpenter.

He was a life member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He was also a member of the Eagles in Thief River Falls. Active in community affairs, Oliver held county and township offices and served as the fire warden for many years. He also helped bring electricity to his rural area, did custom thrashing and operated a sawmill.

He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Oliver is survived by four daughters, Marian (John) Harris of International Falls, Blanche (Ray) Bakken and Doris Cleven, both of Grygla, and Lynette (Thad) Ashton of Cypress, Calif.; one son, Oral "Shorty" (Barb) of International Falls; 23 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; six great great-grand children; one daughter-in-law, Carol Howland of Hawthorne, Calif.; and numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Vernon in 1986; one son-in-law, Harlan Cleven in 1995; his parents; three grandchildren, Dale, Rocky and Timothy Bakken; three great-grandchildren, Darren and Travis Warne and Alliya Jensen.
