Thief River Falls - H. Marie Caldis Hovie, 97, died Tuesday, March 3, 1998 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
A memorial service for Marie Caldis Hovie will be held on Saturday, June 20 at 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Thief River Falls with Reverend William Kerr officiating.
Hazel Marie Steinkraus was born on March 14, 1900 at Bertha, the daughter of William and Margaret Steinkraus. She attended the Bertha schools and the St. Cloud Business School. In 1919 she married James G. Caldis. The couple owned restaurants in Detroit Lakes and Little Falls before establishing their restaurant business and rental properties in Thief River Falls.
In 1952, Marie married long-time Thief River Falls resident Carl Hovie. She contined to manage the Caldis Building at 3rd Street and LaBree Ave. which included several businesses and apartments.
Marie is survived by one son, J. Gordon Caldis of Grand Forks, ND; Phyllis Caldis Gustafson of St. Petersburg, FL and Betty Caldis Westergren of Alexandria; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one sister, Eunice Bluhm; and one niece.
She was prededed in death by her parents and husbands.
