
Greenbush - Gladys Hontvet, 87, died Saturday, October 7, 2000 at Greenbush Nursing Home in Greenbush.
Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 14, at Bethel Lutheran Church in Greenbush with Rev. Ernie Christensen officiating. Private interment will take place at a later time at Nannestad Cemetery, rural Badger.
Gladys Elvina Hontvet was born on May 28, 1913 in Nereson township of Roseau county near Badger, the daughter of Karl and Mary (Olsen) Hontvet. She grew up on her parents' farm south of Badger and attended grades one through eight at District 18 school at rural Badger. She graduated from Badger High School in 1930. She received her teachers training in East Grand Forks and Bemidji State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree. She taught for 47 years in Roseau county schools, coming to Greenbush in 1957 where she taught grades two through five. She retired in 1978. She had been a resident of Greenbush Nursing Home since May.
Gladys was active in several organizations. She was a very active member of Bethel Lutheran Church and its women's groups, the local food shelf, Pioneer Farm, Roseau County Historical Society and County and State Retired Educators Associations.
In 1986, she was selected as Roseau County's Senior Citizen of the Year and represented the county at the Minnesota State Fair. In 1991, she received the Outstanding Person in Service to Education award. She was also involved with Lake of the Woods Bible Camp and World Mission Prayer League. For several years, she sponsored a student in the Philippines through World Vision. The student, Eric Lirio, called her "Mama Gladys."
Survivors include a sister-in-law, Etta Mooney of Thief River Falls, and several nieces and nephews.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters, Emily Olsen Snow, Edna Olsen, Ethel Olsen, Minnie Olsen Thompson and Clara Hontvet Flaten; and twin brothers, Conrad and Clifford Hontvet. A00003B2000OC11
