
Mount Jackson, VA - Arthur J. Holmaas, 85, died Monday, August 16, 1999 at Winchester Hospital in Winchester, VA.
Graveside services were held on Friday, August 20 at Westaker Cemetery in Newfolden with his nephew, Reverend Jerry Holmaas of Brooklyn Park, officiating.
Arthur Julius Holmaas was born on January 29, 1914 in Marsh Grove township, the son of Andrew Erickson and Julia Stokke Holmaas. He was baptized and confirmed at Westaker Lutheran Church in Newfolden. Arthur graduated from Newfolden High School and Moorhead State Teachers College, and he received a master's degree in public administration from the University of Minnesota.
Arthur moved to Washington, D.C. in 1940 and worked for the Department of Agriculture for 30 years. He was a Lt. JG in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1943 to 1946. In 1972 he retired and moved to Mount Jackson, VA where he sold real estate and was active in civic affairs.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Jean; one son, Andrew E. Holmaas of Winchester, VA; three daughters, Julia R. Holmaas of LaPorte, IN, Janet Holmaas Hicks of Sterling, VA and Joanne Greene of Harpers Ferry, WV; one grandson; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Arthur was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Inez, Violet Lee and Alice Knutson; and five brothers, Melvin, Elmer, Willard, I. Stanley, and Emil.
