
Karlstad - Alice A. Holm, 83, died Thursday, February 5, 1998 at Oakwood Homes in Karlstad.
Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, February 10 at Eidsvold Lutheran Church in Halma with Pastor Gary Halverson officiating. Corrienne Jacobson was the organist. Kirstin Olson was the accompanist, and vocal music was provided by Delmoure Hultgren. Casketbearers were Alice's former students, Clifford Davis, Lee Folland, Glen Spilde, Phillard Ryberg, Tilden Spilde and Russell Swenson. Interment was at Eidsvold Cemetery in Halma. The Collins Funeral Home of Karlstad was in charge of the arrangements.
Alice Alvina Leen was born on May 26, 1914 at Erskine, the daughter of Olav and Nettie (Sevalrud) Leen. She grew to womanhood there, was baptized and confirmed at Saron Lutheran Church and graduated from Erskine High School in 1931. She moved with her family to Lake Bronson. Alice attended Bemidji State College for one year, earning a teaching certificate. She began her teaching career at Halma in the fall of 1932. She later taught at the former Beaton School near Halma and at other rural schools in Kittson County.
On August 24, 1938 Alice was united in marriage to Olaf Holm at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, IA. Following their marriage, the couple lived in Halma where she taught for a year and then began working at the Holm and Oberg General Store with her husband and brother-in-law, Arthur Oberg. Olaf died on October 5, 1957, and Alice continued to make her home at Halma, operating the store until 1972 when it was sold.
In 1982 she moved to Karlstad and worked at both Engen Drug and Froberg Department Store for several years. She has resided at Oakwood Homes.
She was a long-time member of Eidsvold Lutheran Church of Halma where she was active in the ladies aid and choir. She served as Halma Village Treasurer for 24 years and was active in 4-H work and the Halma Senior Citizens Group.
Alice is survived by two sons, Orvis of Minneapolis and Roger (Erica) of Vancouver, WA; one daughter, Francine (Douglas) Hultgren of Laurel, MD; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister Edna Skold of Milton-Freewater, OR; and several nieces, nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; two sisters, Myrtle Richardson and Lillian Sele; and one brother in infancy.
