Howard Hoium, 88

Thief River Falls - Howard Hoium, 88, died Friday, September 1, 2000 at Northwest Medical Center in Thief River Falls.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m on Saturday, September 9, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Visitation will be held on Friday, September 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Green Funeral Home in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to services at the church on Saturday.

Howard Harold Hoium was born on August 30, 1912 on North Horace Avenue in Thief River Falls, the son of Iver and Anna (Bothum) Hoium. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church where he was a lifelong member. Howard attended school in Thief River Falls, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1931. At Lincoln, he was active in athletics, and during his senior year was captain of the football, basketball and baseball teams. He was also a member of the National Athletic Scholarship Society. He went on to attend the University of Minnesota for several years, playing on the freshman football and basketball teams. He later played on a championship intramural basketball team

Howard was employed by the United States Postal Service from 1936 until 1973 with the exception of three years during World War II when he worked as an inspector of B-17s and Sherman tanks in Renton, Wash. After the war, he returned to Thief River Falls and married Avis Engelsrud of Newfolden.

Over the years, Howard was active in church and community activities. During retirement, he enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Texas and Arizona. In the summers, he enjoyed visiting his children at the lake and going for pontoon rides. Throughout his life, sports were a major interest, and Howard was both a participant and supporter of many athletic activities. He enjoyed following high school and college sports and collecting historical information on the Prowler and Gopher teams. He also enjoyed keeping in contact with friends from his high school and college days.

Howard was proud of this Norwegian heritage, especially the Sogn roots of both his parents. He was a Golden member of the Sons of Norway and attended Vestlandlaget meetings throughout the Midwest.

Survivors include his wife, Avis; one daughter, Cheryl (John) Valen of Laporte; one son, Harold Hoium of Eden Prairie; and several nieces and nephews.

Howard was preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Corrine Kay; three sisters, Blanche, Alice Chamberlain and Cora; and two brothers, Berlin "Bill" and Raymond.
