
Thief River Falls - Freeman Hiaasen, 88, died on Monday, January 26, 1998 at Oakland Park Nursing Home in Thief River Falls.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. on Thursday, January 29 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden with Reverend John Jorgensen officiating. Brenda Lunke was the organist, and Deland Elseth was the vocalist. Casketbearers were John Sannes, John Blume, Morris Hansen, David Rokke, Lyle Olson and Harvey Skyberg. Burial was at Oak Grove Cemetery in Newfolden. The Green Funeral Home of Thief River Falls was in charge of the arrangements.
Freeman Hiaasen was born on April 3, 1909 in Argyle MN, the son of Christian and Caroline (Sagnes) Hiaasen. He was baptized in the Christian faith and later confirmed. Freeman's family moved to New Folden township in Marshall County when he was in the fourth grade. He graduated from Newfolden High School in 1928. During the depression he went to Chicago to work but returned following the death of his father to help on the family farm.
On November 12, 1942 Freeman entered the U.S. Army at Ft. Snelling. He served in battles and campaigns in the Rhineland and Central Europe. He received the Good Conduct Medal, Bronze Star Medal, American Theater Ribbon and European-African-Middle Eastern Service Ribbon.
On January 2, 1946 Freeman was united in marriage to Maryanne Turek in Trenton, NJ. They moved to Marshall County near Newfolden and farmed there. He also worked at Arctic Cat for many years. He moved to Oakland Park Nursing Home on July 23, 1997.
Freeman was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Otto Knutson American Legion Post.
He enjoyed reading, traveling, gardening and visiting. He loved nature and spending time learning.
Freeman is survived by two daughters, Lorraine (John) Sannes of Thief River Falls and Ilene (John) Blume of Nicollet; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife Maryanne on May 8, 1990; five brothers, Nat, Clarence, Gilbert, Hjalmer, and his twin at birth; and three sisters, Effie Norbo, Gunda Carlson and Ella Rokke.
