
Warroad - Michael Hackett, 72, died Monday, August 30, 1999 at the Roseau Area Hospital in Roseau.
Services were held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, September 4 at the Catholic Church of St. Mary in Warroad with Reverend Duane Pribula officiating. Military honors were accorded by A.O. Mattson American Legion Post 25 of Warroad. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Warroad.
Michael Emmett Hackett was born on February 1, 1927 in St. Paul, the son of Emmett Robert and Bernice A. (Smith) Hackett. Because Michael's father was an immigration inspector, the family lived in many locations. Michael graduated from Baudette High School in 1944.
He served in the U.S. Army as a paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne. He attended the University of Minnesota and also served in the Merchant Marines. Michael returned to Baudette for a short time before moving to Lead, SD where he worked at Homestake gold mine.
On November 10, 1949 Michael married Mary Ellen Sazdoff at Deadwood, SD. The couple lived at Lead, SD until they purchased an island on Lake of the Woods where they built a home and lived for one year.
In 1951 he joined the U.S. Border Patrol and was stationed in Texas for four years. He then joined the U.S. Immigration service as an inspector, working first in Pembina, ND and then in Warroad where he worked from 1960 until his retirement in 1982. Since that time, the couple has continued to lived in Warroad in a home that Michael built.
He was a member of the American Legion in Warroad and enjoyed beekeeping, hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking, writing children's stories and fixing things.
Michael is survived by his wife, Mary of Warroad; two sons, Daniel M. (Rose) of Pleasanton, CA and Michael Jr. of San Francisco, CA; one daughter, Kathy (Sabon) Crook of Westby, WI; one granddaughter; two sisters, Shirley Humeniuk of Baudette and Patricia Gorr of Edina; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Mary Bernice Hackett; and one brother, Robert Hackett. A00003B1999SP08
